Last week a group of academics issued a report proposing changes to the way the state redraws legislative districts. The next time that will happen is 2021.
Currently, the Legislative Reapportionment Commission will consist of 10 members, five appointed by each political party. An eleventh member, or “tiebreaker” will be appointed after one month by the chief justice of the state Supreme Court.
The proposal is to add two more independent members to the commission and require an 8 to 5 majority to approve a new legislative map.
Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, led the effort in making the report. He spoke with Senior Political Correspondent Michael Aron about the report’s recommendations.
