Newark is expanding its summer youth employment program, the largest in the state. At the Newark Summer Youth Employment program, dubbed a “learn and earn” experience, some 3,000 teens and young adults aged 14 to 24 get paid while picking up critical work skills. In addition to work, students are also offered mentors and workforce readiness training to better prepare them for future employment.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said the program levels the playing field and gives young people access to high-quality opportunities. Baraka said the city’s goal is to extend the program to 5,000 residents next summer.
