Gov. Phil Murphy on Thursday announced the first spending by the state of funds from several opioid lawsuits that have garnered approximately $1.2 billion for New Jersey.

Murphy said more than $95 million over the next three years will be invested in “a range of evidence-based strategies to expand care and support individuals in recovery.”

The companies involved in the legal settlements include New Jersey-based Johnson & Johnson, along with three of the nation’s largest pharmaceutical distributors and two of the largest pharmacy chains, CVS and Walgreens.

Among the disbursements announced by Murphy, $24 million will go to harm reduction centers and drug user health services, $17.5 million to expand operations at community peer recovery centers and $17 million to bolster supportive housing, including emergency shelter beds.
