A 14-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with murder in the fatal shooting in Newark on Friday of Detective Joseph Azcona. The teen is also facing charges of attempted murder and illegal weapon possession.

The 26-year-old officer was a five-year veteran and part of a special intelligence unit within the Newark Police Department investigating a group suspected of possessing illegal weapons. He was investigating illegal gun activity when he was shot and killed before he could exit his car, according to prosecutors. Authorities reported that a second officer was also shot and remains in the hospital.

The teenager, whose name has not been released, was hospitalized with injuries from the gunfire exchange and is expected to survive. Five other individuals were also taken into custody.

On Saturday afternoon, Azcona’s body was escorted in a police procession from University Medical Center to a funeral home in Newark.

“It is hard to accept that this kind of mindless assault still happens in a city that has worked tirelessly to bring our violent crime to a 60-year low,” Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said in a statement. “But the reality is that the world still has desperate, damaged people — and Newark must now not only ensure that justice is served, but that we continue to root out the causes and conditions of violence, so that aggression and inflicting harm are not an option.

“This is not a police problem. This is our problem. And because this act of violence has rippled out through our entire community, we must double down on showing love and compassion to each other, as a city of neighbors. We have to do more as a community to embrace our children. We must lift them up and not allow them to fall through the holes of a broken system where adults are unable to work together toward a sustainable solution.”
