Almost 40 years ago, New Jersey approved its first charter schools, then a new model that was aimed to provide an alternative to traditional public schools. With many twists and turns since, the state is now home to more than 80 charter schools that serve 61,295 students, according to the state, or roughly 5% of all public school enrollment.
