The latest unemployment numbers are out for both the national and New Jersey workforce, with the state’s rate ticking up in August by a tenth of a percentage point to 4.8% and payrolls declining slightly. But in the longer term, New Jersey continues to add jobs overall, with the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development listing 49,600 nonfarm jobs added over the last 12 months.
Nearly 9 in 10 of the new jobs were in the private sector, with most of those in the education and health care fields (+36,900 jobs), followed by trade, transportation, and utilities with 12,500 new jobs. The public sector was well behind, adding 7,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
