George Helmy became New Jersey’s junior U.S. Senator on Monday, joining a long list of luminaries who have represented the state in Washington, D.C. In fact, he’s the 76th individual — all men — to hold one of New Jersey’s two Senate seats, according to the U.S. Senate, dating back to William Paterson and Jonathan Elmer in the first Congress in 1789.
Helmy is likely to be one of the shortest-serving as well. The shortest so far was Richard Stockton Field, who was appointed in 1862 and served just seven weeks. The longest serving was the late Frank Lautenberg, of course, who was in the Senate a total of 28 years across two terms.
