Increase in major disciplinary actions for NJ police misconduct in 2023

August 2, 2024 | Number of The Day

Some 460 law enforcement officers in New Jersey received major discipline for wrongdoing in 2023, according to a report the state attorney general’s office issued Wednesday. That was an increase of nearly 14% from 2022, when 404 officers statewide received major discipline, which can include suspensions of five days or more, demotion or termination. Some of the increase could be attributed to the expanded range of incidents that had to be included in the reporting.

“For the first time since information regarding major disciplinary actions has been made public, we have made significant changes to the requirements by expanding the information provided. Increased transparency helps increase confidence in law enforcement, leading to greater public safety,” Attorney General Matt Platkin said in a statement accompanying the release of the report. Annual public reporting of major discipline began in 2021 to increase accountability and transparency in policing.
