Today in New Jersey history, German saboteurs on July 30, 1916 set off an explosion of 100,000 pounds of TNT at the Black Tom Island munitions terminal in the harbor of Jersey City. The bombing was intended to disrupt United States shipments from the terminal to European allies before the U.S. had entered World War I. Four were killed, and the explosion caused extensive damage to the port and blew out windows as far away as Times Square, according to the NewJerseyAlmanac.com website.
