Percentage of homelessness in NJ attributed to evictions in 2023

Eviction was one of the leading causes of homelessness across New Jersey in 2023, according to a report from the state Office of Homelessness Prevention. Evictions increased significantly in 2023 and were second only to being “asked to leave a shared residence” as the reason for homelessness, up from 14.1% in 2022 to 18.51%.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Supreme Court is about to rule on City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Johnson, a case that is considered to be the most consequential in decades concerning the rights of homeless people.
