Chance of aftershocks in the week after an earthquake

April 10, 2024 | Number of The Day

After an earthquake such as the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that struck in New Jersey Friday morning, aftershocks are to be expected. According to the United States Geological Survey, multiple aftershocks have since occurred, including one of 4.0 magnitude on Friday evening and a small aftershock (1.3-magnitude) on Monday during the solar eclipse.

These smaller tremors can increase the likelihood of another earthquake to occur. While scientists cannot predict the exact time and place of an earthquake, the USGS is able to forecast aftershocks in a given period in the affected area. Magnitude 3 earthquakes are significant enough to be felt nearby. According to the USGS, there is a 16% chance of an aftershock of magnitude 3 or above within the first week after an earthquake.
