New Jersey on Monday released its long-awaited report assessing the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The report, conducted independently by the Montgomery, McCracken, Walker and Rhoads firm, was initiated by Gov. Phil Murphy late last year.

The nearly 900-page report focuses on three questions: ‘“What did New Jersey do to be prepared?” “How did New Jersey respond and was it effective?” and “What must New Jersey do now to be better prepared for the inevitable next pandemic or other emergency?”’

Murphy has long framed the review as a tool for future emergencies.

“This report both highlights numerous examples of New Jersey’s strong leadership during the crisis, and identifies gaps in preparedness and structural deficiencies that must be addressed,” Gov. Murphy said in a statement.
