January 23, 2024 | Number of The Day

If you’re thinking of spending your golden years in the Garden State, you may want to think again. A recent survey released by personal-finance website WalletHub puts New Jersey one state from the bottom for places to retire. Kentucky, which ranked 50th is at the bottom of the heap.

WalletHub compared states across 46 key metrics, including affordability, health-related factors and overall quality of life. Here’s the dismal data on New Jersey:

  • 37th – Adjusted cost of living
  • 31st – Annual cost of in-home services
  • 42nd – WalletHub “taxpayer” ranking
  • 34th – Elder-friendly labor market
  • 30th – Percentage of population age 65 and older
  • 45th – Health care facilities per capita

So where can New Jersey seniors go when they want to retire? Florida took the top slot, followed by Colorado and Virginia. Nearby Pennsylvania was ranked 10th.
