Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation Tuesday allowing students in grades six through 12 to have one excused absence per school year to attend a civic event.
The absence can be used for events sponsored by government entities, community-based organizations or nonprofits. They must include an element of service learning or address a public issue or concern. The student’s parent or guardian must provide a signed written notice and documentation demonstrating the event meets the requirements five school days before the scheduled absence. School districts can choose to allow additional excused absences for civic events.
“Providing students the option to attend civic events throughout their academic careers creates an opportunity for our future leaders to become more engaged in our democracy and society,” Murphy said in a statement. “These events will not only educate students outside of the classroom, but they have the potential to spark an interest in public service and community work. The next generations of changemakers are in New Jersey public schools, and it’s crucial that we offer every resource available to help them achieve their dreams.”
