Over 500,000 people left New York state in 2022, with Florida the top migration destination as 91,201 people made the move. Next up was New Jersey, with an influx of 75,103 people, followed by Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
A majority of these New Yorkers said they were chasing a better quality of life, according to USA Today. Other factors in the moving pattern included a lower cost of living outside New York, greater work flexibility and the desire to be closer to family.
New York in 2022 also saw its highest influx of people in a decade, yet it still was a net population loss of 244,000 people.
