New Jersey has produced a huge range of musical talent — Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, Sarah Vaughan, Lauryn Hill, Les Paul, and on and on.

Rolling Stone magazine has just included Marissa Paternoster, the notable punk-indie rocker, in its list of “The 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” a fact that Rutgers Today proudly notes. Paternoster, who is a Rutgers alumna, grew up in Elizabeth and is best known as lead singer and guitarist in Screaming Females and for her solo musical project, Noun.

According to Rolling Stone, which lists her at 150, “Whether across Screaming Females’ eight LPs or her solo work as Noun, Marissa Paternoster plays with both immense skill and brutal simplicity. Since forming Screaming Females in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 2005, she’s tirelessly built a sprawling catalog of raw indie rock and power pop; her hooks are brittle and infectious, and her untamed solos sound like they’re trying to take a life of their own. Paternoster has slowly stripped back the effects and refined her low-fi sound over the years, but it’s still as clear as ever that she’s one of our greatest modern punk voices, carrying on the torch of forebears like Sleater-Kinney and the Breeders.”
