Per-gallon gas tax New Jersey motorists are paying since Oct. 1

October 2, 2023 | Number of The Day

Starting Sunday, Oct. 1, the gas tax in New Jersey increased by less than 1 cent. It’s the first gas tax increase in three years, coming after fuel consumption in the state fell short of projections during the 2023 fiscal year. New Jersey has the seventh highest gas tax rate in the country, with motorists now paying 42.3 cents in tax per gallon of gasoline. California has the highest gas tax in the country at 77.9 cents per gallon.

The automatic increase is required under state transportation-finance law, as enacted in 2016 by former Gov. Chris Christie. Revenue from the gas tax goes into the Transportation Trust Fund and will help fund road, bridge and rail infrastructure projects.
