Early detection of breast cancer is imperative when it comes to treatment. It’s the second leading cause of death due to cancer among women in New Jersey, although that’s declining. Risk assessment, risk reduction counseling, clinical breast exams and mammograms are all ways to lower the risk of breast cancer mortality.

It’s recommended that people in the 25-39 age group should have a checkup at least once every 3 years, with more frequent screenings as they age. Prevent Cancer Foundation’s latest report says 10% of women ages 40 years and older have never had a breast cancer screening.

In New Jersey more than, 1,200 people die due to breast cancer every year, according to the New Jersey State Health Assessment Data. With early screening and detection, the state’s objective is to reduce the death rate.

“We have come a long way in being able to find breast cancers early to achieve better outcomes, but in order to take advantage of improved technologies and treatments, we need women to get breast cancer screenings,” said Jody Hoyos, CEO of the Prevent Cancer Foundation. “By understanding the problem —the real reasons people aren’t going to the doctor — and working to address the issues identified, we can increase screening rates and empower people to stay ahead of cancer.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
