Children in NJ child care facilities in line for improvement grants

September 22, 2023 | Number of The Day

The application period for the first phase in a state grant program for improvements in child care facilities will close Oct. 20. Because of overwhelming interest and demand, starting in 2024 the New Jersey Economic Development Authority will accept applications for a second phase.

The funding goes toward interior and exterior facility improvements, with the goal of creating high-quality learning environments. Since the program was launched in November, 528 applications have been submitted from child care centers that serve more than 43,000 children and employ almost 11,000 people.

So far, 79 centers have been approved for grant funding; the approved facilities serve almost 7,000 children and employ 1,800-plus teachers and administrators. Grants go from $50,000 to $200,000 and can be used for things like architect fees, permit fees, construction management, freight and shipping delivery, environmental assessment, furniture, fixtures and other equipment.
