Those lucky enough to have registered for the Great Tomato Tasking at the Rutgers Snyder Research and Extension Farm in Pittstown on Wednesday are in for a taste explosion. More than 50 varieties of New Jersey tomatoes will be there for the tasting — beefsteak tomatoes, plum tomatoes, round tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and grape tomatoes. Who wouldn’t like to try a tomato called Get Stuffed!? Or one called Evil Olive? For those who like to mix things up, how about the tomato known as Chocolate Pear.
We’re crushed not to be able to attend the Great Tomato Tasting. Registration was required and clearly there was strong demand to bite into a selection of the lycopene-filled love apples, as they are known in some quarters. Registration has closed. Lucky registrants will get to take a wagon tour of the farm and learn about the research being conducted there. For the rest of us, there’s always next year.
