For some of us, the phrase “pick your own” conjures up the pleasant task of surveying the finest Jersey Fresh fruits and vegetables in an air-conditioned supermarket, preferably one with a coffee bar. For other folks, especially families with young kids, the goal is to bake under the hot sun while doing short-term damage to your sacroiliac — all for the chance to grub and gather blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples, pumpkins, watermelons and who knows what else out of bona fide New Jersey dirt.
If the second description is your idea of fun, you’re in luck: The Garden State is home to 200 pick-your-own farms. And if you’re a bit befogged as to whether you can pick cauliflower and pumpkins on the same weekend, several helpful sites offer growing-season calendars (scroll, scroll, scroll to find it). Be warned, the folks building pick-your-own websites are more likely to be farmers than web wizards: features like finding a farm using your ZIP code are buggy, if they work at all. A simple Google search of pick-your-own farms in your county will give you the best map you’re going to find.
Enjoy. All this talk about sun and soil has put us in need of a double latte.
