NJ tomato harvest in 2021, in pounds

August 10, 2023 | Number of The Day

New Jersey is one of the top 10 tomato producers in the country, according to the state Department of Agriculture. That’s a mite modest, we think, at least when it comes to the flavor, juiciness and all-around awesomeness of New Jersey’s many varieties.

The Garden State’s tomato season goes through the end of October, so there’s plenty of time left to sample. In 2021, New Jersey harvested 56 million pounds of tomatoes on 2,900 acres. That translated to $19 million in production value for tomatoes that year.

“New Jersey is well known for producing great tasting tomatoes with a flavor that is unmatched,” Department of Agriculture’s Assistant Secretary Joe Atchison III said. “We encourage everyone to purchase Jersey Fresh tomatoes and other Jersey Fresh produce throughout the growing season.” Hear, hear.
