It’s National Blueberry Month, which the New Jersey Department of Agriculture is marking on Monday, July 10 by distributing free Jersey Fresh blueberries to beachgoers in Wildwood, Atlantic City and Seaside Heights. The Garden State’s blueberry season lasts until the end of July, with as many as 300,000 crates produced each day.
Blueberries are now the top crop in New Jersey. Some 34 million pounds were harvested in the state last year.
The Jersey Fresh blueberries will be available on the boardwalk at the three Shore locations from 1 p.m. until supplies last.
“This has been a very popular event each of the past two years and we anticipate there will be high demand for delicious and plump Jersey Fresh blueberries,” NJDA Assistant Secretary Joe Atchison said. “Blueberries are one of the highlights of the growing season here in the Garden State and we look forward to being on the boardwalks again.”
