New Jersey’s 40th Legislative District is in North Jersey and spans parts of three counties. After redistricting, its boundaries slightly changed. It covers portions of Bergen County (Franklin Lakes, Ridgewood and Wyckoff), Essex County (Caldwell, Essex Fells, Fairfield, North Caldwell, Verona and West Caldwell) and Passaic County (Hawthorne, Little Falls, Totowa, Wayne and Woodland Park).
This has long been a red district, although the proportion of registered voters who are Democrats and Republicans is roughly equal — 31% each. About 38% of the total are not affiliated with any party.
Republican Sen. Kristin Corrado, the former Passaic County clerk from Totowawho was first elected in 2017, is seeking reelection. Opposing her is Democrat Jennifer Ehrentraut, a Hawthorne school board member and deputy director of human resources for Passaic County.
Incumbent GOP Assemblyman Christopher DePhillips, a Wyckoff attorney and the vice president of a consulting and systems company, is running with Al Barlas, a Cedar Grove man who served as the Republican chairman of the New Jersey Legislative Apportionment Commission. Assemblyman Kevin Rooney chose not to seek reelection. The Democratic candidates are Giovanna Irizarry, a Totowa woman who is the director of special education in Woodland Park schools, and Jennifer Marrinan, a small business owner from Wyckoff.
