New Jersey’s 37th Legislative District borders the Hudson River in Bergen County. Its boundaries slightly changed following last year’s redistricting and it now covers Bogota, Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, Fort Lee, Hackensack, Leonia, Palisades Park, Ridgefield Park, Teaneck, and Tenafly.

Democrats have long held this district. Half of registered voters are Democrats, 14% are Republicans and most of the rest are unaffiliated.

All three Democratic incumbents are seeking reelection.

Sen. Gordon Johnson, a former Englewood police officer, moved up from the Assembly to the Senate in 2021 when the seat opened up. Dierdre Paul of Tenafly is the Republican candidate.

The Assembly incumbents, elected with Johnson two years ago, are Shama Haider, one of two Muslim woman who were the first to join the Legislature and a former Tenafly councilwoman, and Ellen Park, an Englewood Cliffs attorney and the first Korean American woman elected to the Legislature. The GOP candidates for Assembly are Katherine Lebovics of Tenafly and Robert Bedoya of Fort Lee.
