New Jersey’s 32nd Legislative District lies along the Hudson River. It covers Hoboken and northern Jersey City in Hudson County.
A Democratic stronghold, the district’s registered voters are majority Democratic — 53%. Just 11% of registrants are Republicans and most of the rest are unaffiliated.
None of the three current Democrats — Sen. Nicholas Sacco and Assembly members Angelica Jimenez and Pedro Mejia — are seeking reelection. Sacco and Mejia were both redistricted into the neighboring 33rd District, while Jimenez ran unsuccessfully for the West New York commission.
The redistricting shake-up put Assemblyman Raj Mukherji, a lawyer and former US Marine who currently represents the 33rd District, into the 32nd, where he is now running for Senate. He faces Republican Ilyas Mohammed, who formerly worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers. Both are from Jersey City.
The Democratic candidates for the Assembly are John Allen, who recently served as chief of staff to the mayor of Hoboken and lives in the city, and Jessica Ramirez, a Jersey City attorney and first-time candidate for public office. Robert Ramos, who lists an address in North Bergen that is linked to other political organizations, is the only Republican on the ballot. The other GOP candidate, Alex Garcia, withdrew from the race.
