87.5%

Save rate at NJ animal shelters

April 21, 2023 | Number of The Day

April 30 is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day. In recognition of that, the New Jersey Department of Health is organizing Adopt a Shelter Pet Day events in the state. Shelters participating in the events, which will take place April 28-30, will waive adoption fees.

Shelters and pounds are often overburdened, with many at or over capacity. According to animal advocacy group Best Friends, more than 59,000 cats and dogs are entered into New Jersey shelters, with an estimated save rate statewide of 87.5%. This is based on a blend of data from 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Although the link between people and pets is proven to provide several health benefits (for the humans) — increased heart health, decreased stress, less loneliness and anxiety — not all pets that enter shelters get adopted. Nationwide, around 4 million pets are adopted from shelters annually.

“New Jersey Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is a great reminder to residents that many loving animals of all ages are available at their local shelters and pounds and in need of a good home,” said Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli.
