Rutgers–New Brunswick undergrads and grads chosen as Fulbright recipients

February 21, 2023 | Number of The Day

Rutgers University is tooting its horn — and rightly so — over the selection this year of 19 Rutgers-New Brunswick undergraduates and graduates for prestigious Fulbright grants. That number of recipients also marks Rutgers as among top producers for the Fulbright program,  the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program.

Some 2,000 Fulbright grants are issued annually to cover the cost of a student’s travel, housing and living expenses for a year in the country where they will be teaching or studying. The program is administered by the Institute of International Education for the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Rutgers Today notes the top-producer distinction is “shared by some of the nation’s most elite institutions, including Princeton University, Brown University, Georgetown University and Harvard University.” The distinction is nothing new for Rutgers, which has been a top-producing Fulbright school nine times in the past decade, with about 300 Rutgers-New Brunswick students honored since the scholarship program began more than 75 years ago. Sixteen of Rutgers’ Fulbright recipients this year accepted the grants.
