Last month’s place, tied with 1932, as mildest January in NJ since records began

January has been a weird month weatherwise in New Jersey, State Climatologist Dr. David Robinson acknowledges in his latest monthly weather review. With recent temperatures of 50 degrees Fahrenheit and above, and not a single snowstorm in the first month of the year, something has seemed off. The average temperature last month was 9.3 degrees above normal, tying it for first place with January 1932 as the mildest January in New Jersey since records began in 1895.

There were only a handful of days when the temperature last month fell below 20 degrees and the state average snowfall for January ranks as the third least since 1895.

The climate anomalies aren’t just limited to New Jersey. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, “Europe saw its warmest January on record, North America had its fifth-warmest January on record and Africa had its sixth warmest.”

As for the reason for the unusual temperatures, Robinson said in an interview with NJ Advance Media, “All of our day-to-day weather is being influenced by an overall warmer global climate. However, the major variations seen from day to day are associated with transient weather patterns.”
