February’s Labor Market Spotlight, compiled by the state Department of Labor & Workforce Development, gives a snapshot of Black employment and business ownership in New Jersey. It shows that around 10% of the state’s businesses are Black- or African American-owned. That equates to about 88,000 Black-owned enterprises. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, 1.2 million New Jersey residents identify as Black or African American, or 13% of all residents.
Black and African American workers comprise 15% of the state’s labor force. Roughly 26% of Black residents over age 25 have a bachelor’s degree or higher; some 40% work in management, business, science and arts occupational groups, according to the Labor Market Spotlight.
