Polls are closed, the Associated Press has called Gov. Phil Murphy the winner over Republican Jack Ciattarelli in what appears to be New Jersey’s closest race for governor in 40 years. But the counting continues.

State elections law lays out a specific timeline and process that has been updated recently to allow for ballots sent through the mail. For the latest on the numbers in the race, check the NJ Spotlight News results page.

Here are the key dates and next steps:

Nov. 8

  • Deadline for counting all ballots postmarked on or before Nov. 2

Nov. 19

  • County election boards of canvassers meet to review results
  • Deadline for campaigns to apply for a recount of the election and deadline to apply for a recheck of the results recorded on voting machines
  • Results of all provisional and emergency ballots must be reported by each county board of elections

Nov. 20

  • County clerk must submit results to secretary of state’s office

Dec. 2

  • Board of State Canvassers’ deadline to officially certify results

Dec. 4

  • Filing deadline to contest election results
