Oct. 23, 2021: On the first day of early in-person voting in New Jersey, voters in Clinton check in on electronic poll books.

New Jersey’s new system of statewide early voting has ended, with close to 208,000 people casting ballots, according to an NJ Spotlight analysis of state Division of Elections data.

The law signed earlier this year that set up in-person, machine voting on nine days prior to Election Day requires that election officials release information about voting daily. While not showing how individuals voted — that is a secret ballot — the data helps the candidates’ campaigns gauge how they may be doing and determine whom to nudge to go to the polls.

Another 525,000 New Jerseyans had cast ballots by mail as of Nov. 1. Total turnout so far is 11.1%. Four years ago, 39% of registrants voted.
