At a press conference Monday afternoon, Sen. Bob Menendez discussed Sunday’s raid by U.S. Special Forces that killed Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the former head of ISIS.

President Donald Trump praised the operation, reporting that no American forces were injured and that the raid was also a great success for intelligence gathering. According to Trump, al-Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest when cornered by U.S. forces, killing himself and three children.

Menendez praised the raid and the outcome but criticized the president for not informing Democratic leadership of the operation.

“And it’s a sad state of events because historically the leaders of the congress on both sides and the leaders of committees on national security, which would also include the position I have as the ranking democrat on the foreign relations committee, would be notified. But in any event that’s not what happened. But I will say this, that while we rejoice in that ISIS leader is now dead, we cannot believe that that alone means the end of ISIS,” Menendez said.

The president says he kept the information from Democrats in order to prevent leaks.
