For third graders in Newark, Tuesday was one for the books. In an effort to “foster learning and community engagement,” Newark Public Schools and the Newark Public Library announced a joint initiative to hand out 45,000 free library cards to city students and teachers.

Thirty third graders in attendance at the initiative’s launch were among the first to receive their new cards, starting off September’s Library Card Sign-Up on the right foot.

“I feel happy that I have my first library card!” said Elliot Street Elementary School student Ariella Taylor.

Between special events, classes and more, Newark education officials hope the initiative will inspire students and teachers to explore the bevy of opportunities provided at the public library.

“All of our third graders in this incredible partnership with the Newark Public Library will in fact not only be issued a library card, but will be required to take an extended classroom experience, from their classroom and their schools to the main library here in the city of Newark,” said Roger Leon, Newark Public Schools superintendent.
