Sex abuse victims would have more time to come forward and sue under a bill the Assembly passed Monday to extend New Jersey’s current two-year civil statute of limitations.
The Senate passed the measure earlier in March. It now heads to Gov. Phil Murphy’s desk.
It would allow victims of childhood sexual abuse to file civil suits up until age 55 or seven years after they recognize and connect their emotional trauma to their abuse.
The bill would also let victims sue both individuals and institutions in civil court.
Victims who were previously unable to file lawsuits due to the time restrictions will have a two-year window to pursue a case.
Efforts to extend the state’s statute of limitations have stalled in the Legislature for more than 20 years.
Murphy has expressed his support for the bill.
