The state’s Department of Community Affairs released its first quarterly report on the progress Atlantic City has made towards meeting the goals toward a return to local control, and the news is generally good for the beleaguered city.

“Positive things are happening in the city,” said a statement from Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver, who serves as DCA commissioner.

In the first reporting period the report says the city created a structure and hired staff to implement the transition report titled, “Atlantic City: Building a Foundation for a Shared Prosperity.”

The report also points to progress made on strengthening the capacity of employees to operate the city, diversifying the city’s economic base, establishing a jobs training program, developing a paid internship program and creating a Citizens Advisory Board.

“While much has been accomplished in recent months, much more remains to be done to build a strong foundation for a shared prosperity so that everyone can benefit from the many opportunities coming to the city,” continued Oliver.

Atlantic City has been under state control since 2016.
