Former Port Authority Chairman David Samson pleaded guilty to federal charges that he used his position to get United Airlines to reinstate a flight to South Carolina, which was close to his vacation home. The “Chairman’s flight” was uncovered in the Bridgegate investigation.
After Samson’s plea, prosecutors announced charges were being filed against former New Jersey Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox for his involvement in convincing United to reinstate the flight.
While he served as chairman, Samson flew on United Airlines from Newark Airport to Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina, which is approximately 50 miles from his vacation home. Shortly after he resigned his chairman post, United Airlines canceled the flight, which many have since said was losing money. Federal prosecutors investigated the flight and United Airlines CEO Jeff Smisek resigned.
