Ask Away: What’s the oldest township in New Jersey?

A librarian at the New Jersey Historical Society told us there are a number of settlements in New Jersey dating back to the 1600s. One example is Newark, which founded in 1666. Elizabeth (formerly Elizabethtown), Bergen, and Salem are all older than Newark as settlements, and one of the oldest townships in the state is Woodbridge.
Of course, there’s a difference between settlements, towns, and cities. For more on that, click here.
