Stockton University President Herman J. Saatkamp Jr. will take his medical leave starting today rather than staying on through summer, the Galloway Township school announced. When Saatkamp originally submitted his resignation April 22, he offered to remain in office until a “mutually agreed upon date after Aug. 31, 2015.”

However, he also cited “past and present health considerations” as a factor in his resignation.

On Tuesday, Saatkamp said in a prepared statement that: “It has become increasingly evident recently that I need to deal with these health issues more immediately. Effective April 28, 2015, I will be taking a medical leave of absence. My original plan was to remain until at least Aug. 31, thereby giving Stockton time to initiate a plan for situating an interim president while a search for the next president was underway. It saddens me to have to leave this abruptly.”
